Egypt’s food delivery startup Elmenus raises funding from Careem to expand across the region

Uber-backed Careem invests an undisclosed amount in Elmenus, a leading Egyptian food delivery app, in an effort to roll out more services and expand its market share across the region.

Elmenus is a Cairo based food delivery startup that helps people decide what to eat through a comprehensive platform with user photos and a personalised food discovery experience. The Egyptian startup is expanding rapidly and scaling its operations and now connects users to 6,000 restaurants across Egypt.

Last year, Elumnus raised $10 million in funding from several investors, including Egyptian electronic payment platform Fawry, New York-based hedge fund Luxor Capital and Egyptian property developer Marakez. Before this, Elumnus raised a Series B round of $8 million from Dubai-based Global Ventures and Cairo-based Algebra Ventures.

“We’ve been very impressed with the Elmenus teams’ drive and purposeful approach to building a successful food business.”

Egypt is Careem‘s biggest market in ride-hailing and now it is extending its reach by exploring the rising market of food delivery services. This partnership will help connect the company with more than 12,000 eateries in five Egyptian cities and their customers.

This agreement with elmenus is a crucial step in launching Careem’s Super App across the region.

“There is an enormous potential in Egypt to improve the food ordering experience and Elmenus is uniquely positioned to lead the way.”
